Traditions and Festivities

Frigiliana celebrates its Patron Saint Festivites on 20th January ( Saint Sebastian Day ) and on 13th June ( Saint Anthony's Day ). This last date coincides with the Feria celebrations. The Romeria ( pilgrimage ) is well worth seeing. It commemorates the Christian victory over the Morisco population in June 1569.

Religious festivities such as Easter week enjoy great prestige. The atmosphere of respect and seclusion is particularly felt during the procession of the Virgin Soledad ( Solitude ). Only women are allowed to join, dressed fully in black. This procession winds its way through the streets of the Mudejar quarter, in the dim candle light on Good Friday night. However, spring time is the best time of the year to visit Frigiliana, particularly on the Day of the Cross ( 3rd May ).

At dawn, the increasing number of visitors are able to catch a glimpse of the most idyllic picture of the village with beautiful flower decorations of the crosses on every corner of the village, adorned with all sorts of plants, and also enjoy the tasty typical stews. If you are lucky, you will probably leave with a handful of typical products of the area given out by the villagers.

Cultural Activities

Flamenco Singing Contest " Villa de Frigiliana " ( May and June )
International Traditional Dance Festival ( August )

Gastronomy

Choto Frito ( fried kid ) in an almond sauce with garlic. Migas ( fried breadcrumbs ), Ajocolorao, cauliflower and Easter Week stews, cod omelette... etc. These are just some of the typical dishes, that can be enjoyed in the majority of the restaurants in Frigiliana. There are also equally delicious desserts and cakes elaborated exclusively here, such as arropia, marcocha ( honey syrup ) and batatillas ( honeyed sweet potatoes ) with sugar cane honey, specially produced at the sugar cane factory. We should also mention the exquisite olive oil and moscatel wine produced in the area. You can find them in most shops and restaurants in the village.

Craftsmanship

There is a large number of craftsmen in Frigiliana that use all sorts of materials in their workshop. These materials range from common clay and wood to those more curious ones such as water pumpkins, glass, leather and sparto grass. There is a textile co-operative called " Telares de Frigiliana " that makes all sorts of handmade carpets and tapestry with materials used by their ancestors centuries ago.
